a happy birthday to my father

A Birthday Cake Martini

Do you know what my dad is doing today on his birthday? He's antiquing for my wedding! Seriously, can we give this man the Best Dad in the World medal now? And he's taking pictures, so I can share his amazing finds on Everything Pretty (stay tuned for that post later). Now you know where I get it from.

This is a photo of my dad and I, taken at my Aunt's wedding
when I was about six or seven years old. I was the flowergirl.

My dad was the first man I ever danced with.
I remember this exact moment. He had me stand on the tops of his feet, so he could show me the way. I'm so thankful for whoever it was who took this photo. I've been saving this picture, thinking the next time I'll be dancing with my dad in a white dress will be at my wedding.

To my dad on his birthday:
"Dance with me Daddy, I take him by the hand.
Like a primaballerina, atop his shoes I stand.
With my first and favorite partner, we glide across the floor.
By the spark in his eyes, I know I'm loved and adored.
He is charming and funny, he is big and strong,
we laugh. I twirl and giggle, as I follow him along.
We dance into each other's hearts, sweet memories of these days. Daddy and I will dance again, the day he gives my hand away." - Teri Harrison

Five Things I'm Grateful For...

Happy Thanksgiving, Little Pretties! If you took the time out today to come on our site, you are the shit. If you check this out tomorrow after you've stuffed your face full of turkey and god knows what else, you are still the shit. Above all else, we are so thankful for you because it's nice to know someone is listening and sharing our love for everything pretty.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we'd like to share . . .

Five things Julia is grateful for:

1.     Moving to New York City! After a year filled with FOUR moves and many, many life changes, I have settled in New York City. I am so grateful to live in this inspiring and ambitious city. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I wouldn’t place myself anywhere else at this point in my life.
2.     Meeting Venessa and collaborating on Everything-Pretty.com. As many of you bloggers know, writing a blog is an amazing creative outlet. I enjoy being inspired everyday by the things I see and read &  so happy I met an amazing friend that I get to create this with.
3.     Having a job where I get excited to go to work everyday. I work for a publishing house and get access to fabulous books and interact with phenomenal authors. I feel very lucky to be in the career that I am in.
4.     Being surrounded by supportive friends and family. The people in my life are the most encouraging and outstanding people I know.
5.     I have truly found myself and am 100% happy with the person that I have become. I love my alone time and am fortunate I can spend the entire day with myself and be fulfilled.

Five things Venessa is grateful for:
Disclaimer: I've have been in a rut lately (stressing over money, work, mean people), so this is a major exercise for me because I've been a bit dramatic lately; like, the world is falling apart dramatic. Paul seriously just said to me: "If you were a pilgrim, you would not have made it through the winter." It's sad, but true. So this is good, real good. It's important to realize how lucky I am right now and what I'm truly thankful for.

1. The Hard Times. I get bored easily. I can't sit still, and unfortunately mostly everything in NYC cost money. That's why I have to be resourceful. Why else do you think I make jewelry hangers out of branches?!? Because it looks cool?? Well, yes . . . but also because it saves me money and I can still do what I love to do best (make things pretty). But seriously, I think my future self will look back on this time and be proud. It's added a little grit to my morning coffee. I'm working with it.

     2. The people in my life that I love and who love me.
You'd think this goes without saying, but it doesn't.
No matter how hard I think things are going, it's
all going to be OK because I have people who
    won't let me fall.

    3. For meeting Julia and starting Everything Pretty. I can't remember what inspired me to get started, but I do know that Julia made it possible to keep going. I know this is like one big love fest right now, but seriously, she has become such a great friend to me in such a short amount of time. I needed a friend like her in NYC. Believe it or not, they are hard to come by. And even though we have such similar tastes, we are two different girls just trying to get by in the city.

4. I know I already mentioned the people I love (see number 3), but I am so so thankful for Paul and my little boy Otis (yes, he's a dog). I come home everyday to the two of them, I laugh, I cry, I bitch, and yet, they still love me. P.S. Paul made cookies tonight and I wanted to show you a picture of him in a sweet apron, but for some reason, the photo isn't showing up in my email. I am not thankful for my Android.

5. My job. Even though I have my bad days, I am so thankful I have one. Trust me, Paul is trying to find a job now and it's not easy. I know that no matter how crazy I feel sometimes in my office, at least I have one right now and there's 1 out of 10 people in the US who can't say the same thing.  If you are reading this and you don't have a job, I would suggest taking a job abroad teaching English. For real! I would! You can spend this time traveling, earning enough money to keep you going, and perhaps learn a different language yourself. Think about it.

What are you thankful for today?

highly impressionable we are

The Perfect Thanksgiving Dress

Happy Thanksgiving week! It is my favorite holiday - filled with great food, friends, family and major veg outs. Because I always revert to sweatpants after a big meal on Thursday, I have been trying to find a great dress (with room to spare) for the amount of turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie I am going to consume this week. I will be in dresses similar to the below all week... no tight cocktail dresses for this girl!

J Crew drawstring dress, $350
Sugarhill Boutique sheer long sleeve dress, $85

Separation Anxiety

I've been in Chicago for four days for work, and oh my lord, I am happy to be back. Technically, I'm still here at my hotel, The Palmer House, sitting here:

(Seriously, how gorg is this place?)

But I'm back on EP! Oh, how I missed you all.

This was my first time in Gotham city, and it certainly won't be my last. I am a fan. Sadly, I didn't have time to do much sightseeing, but I did find one thing I desperately need to share with you all:

This coat by Agnes Pogorecka. I'm searching for this designer on the world wide web, but I can't seem to find her! This coat was in good company on display next to many other beautiful pieces by fashion students(?), and while the others were breathtaking/extremely high fashion, this was the only one I could really picture myself wearing. Actually, I'm drooling right now just thinking about it. Thoughts?
